Using Google for Education

Exercise caution and discretion when working in Google for Education.

MSU has executed a Google Apps/G Suite for Education Agreement with Google for MSU-specific access to the Core Apps listed above that provides some additional protections to the public versions. These Core Apps don't include Gmail. Use of any public Google tools for MSU data is not recommended.

Institutional data

Most forms of confidential data should NOT be used with any Google Apps. Google has agreed to properly host MSU’s FERPA protected educational records as an institutional agent in Core Apps only. Please avoid any use of Google Apps with confidential data other than educational records. Similarly Google Apps should NOT be used for any information subject to U.S. export control laws.

Document owner responsibility

Document Owners using the Core Apps must regularly review sharing permissions to validate authorized parties have a valid need-to-know role and that content is appropriate for hosting under the Google Apps/G Suite for Education Agreement.

Document owners must ensure compliance with MSU policies when granting access to documents and avoid improper disclosure of confidential data that could occur from sharing folders and individual documents. Neither MSU nor Google makes backups of information stored on these services. MSU users should assume individual responsibility for regularly backing up information and data they store with Google.

Browser compatibility

Google for Education supports the current and prior major releases of Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari on a rolling basis. Each time a new version is released, Google will begin supporting the latest update and stop supporting the third-oldest version.
